Research

For my MSc Thesis I am studying the post-fledging survival, movements, and habitat use of juvenile European hoopoes (Upupa epops). The goals of this study are to (1) quantify survival rates that can be used to improve demographic modelling for the species, and (2) identify different environmental variables that influence their survival and movements. I’m also interested in determining key habitat features that they select to help manage their populations in the intensively managed agricultural landscape of Valais. To get these data, I am tagging the juvenile hoopoes with radio transmitters and searching for them via radiotracking daily during the breeding season.
